As the great and (kind of) good gather in New York for the diplomatic and social whirl that accompanies the UN General Assembly and Climate Week, it’s clear there’s much work to do just to hold the line on some key climate commitments – let alone taking them forward.
For one, negotiators drafting the pact that will emerge from the UN’s Summit of the Future, happening on Sunday and Monday, have struggled to insert a COP28 pledge to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems. Is it there to stay?
Second, Azerbaijan is going to have to pile on the pressure at next week’s high-level dialogue on the sidelines of UNGA to unblock stalled talks on a new global climate finance goal, which is due to be agreed in Baku in two months’ time, with everything still to play for.
