This week at Yale Environment 360, Berlin-based journalist Paul Hockenos explainshow, in the face of the cutoff of Russian oil and gas, Europe succeeded in making it through the winter with its climate goals intact. Aided by mild weather that curbed demand for heating, the EU got serious about energy conservation, ramped up production of wind and solar power, and tweaked policies to speed its green transition. “This portends Europe’s nearly complete phaseout of coal and a substantial reduction in natural gas generation in the power sector by 2030,” says an analyst. Despite fears of increased emissions, the EU remains on track to slash CO2 emissions by at least 55 percent over the next seven years. Read the article.
