As 2021 draws to a close, Fix, Grist’s solutions lab, is looking to the future. Today, we published 22 Predictions for 2022 — a collection of insights, forecasts, and goals for the year ahead from 22 climate and justice leaders.

2021 was an “oh shit” year for the climate movement. But doom and gloom will never be the full story. Even though many of the big investments we make to draw down carbon emissions today won’t be visible for decades to come, there are plenty of solutions out there that can impact our lives in the immediate future — even in the next year. Matanya Horowitz, founder and CEO of recycling tech company AMP Robotics, predicts that long-stagnant recycling rates will start to increase. Chloe Maxmin, a state senator in Maine, sees a trend of constitutional amendments at the state level that will keep environmental protections safe from political whims. And Rev. Michael Malcom of The People’s Justice Council expects that Build Back Better funding will scale up community-led solutions.

Those are just a taste of the forward-looking solutions featured in 22 Predictions, in which leaders and experts share their visions for what’s going to shake up infrastructure, arts and culture, energy, food, and more. Take a gander at the project today — and if it leaves you feeling inspired to make a few resolutions of your own for 2022, let us know. In Fix’s Looking Forward newsletter, we’re asking readers to share their personal climate and justice goals with us for the new year. We’ll pile ’em together and share the inspiration in a future newsletter. Subscribe to Looking Forward to follow along.
